Going digital, introduction of Global Services for Mobile (GSM)

Today, all local and toll trunks utilise digital transmission facilities. Cable & Wireless (Barbados) Limited delivers a full suite of products and services that provide its sophisticated customers with excellent telephone service, complemented by state-of- the art services made available through new and emerging technologies.

The vast majority of international telephone calls and data services are transmitted on undersea fibre optic cable systems that are extremely robust and resilient. In the domestic network, the switching and other telecommunications equipment used are supplied by major North American suppliers who also supply the US and European markets.

These systems provide sophisticated and up to date services. Over the past ten (10) years Cable & Wireless has been upgrading its cable network to minimize the impact of the environment. Some of the improvements made relate to extensive use of fibre optic and underground cables as well as the use of heat shrink and gel technologies to totally seal the aerial cable. The result has been a very dramatic reduction in the number of faults.

The company launched the island’s first Global Services for Mobile (GSM) network in August 2003 and again put Barbados on the map with this exciting state of the art technology.
